Supplies:

  • 8 ½” x 8 ½” sheet cardstock (this will be completely covered, so color doesn’t really matter – I usually try to match it somewhat to the background of the decorative paper as the edges might show a little)
  • 8 ½” x 8 ½” sheet decorative paper (outside of box)
  • 8 ½” x 8 ½” sheet white or off-white text-weight paper (for inside of box - I use light-weight drawing paper from an artist’s pad, but copy paper would probably also work)
  • 5 Ύ” x 7 Ύ” sheet cardstock ( this will be the lid – pick a color that coordinates with the decorative paper)
  • paper trimmer
  • bone folder
  • glue, paper paste, or double-stick tape
  • ink
  • stamps
  • embellishments
  • scissors or X-acto knife

Instructions:

  1. Measure 2 ½” on all sides of the 8 ½” x 8 ½” cardstock, score and fold all sides in (fig. 1).  This is the bottom of the box.  Tape or glue decorative paper to the box.

  2. From each corner of the cardstock, cut out a 2 ½” square (fig. 2).
  3. Stamp the 8 ½” square of text-weight paper and add embellishments (fig. 3).  This will be the inside of the box.  I usually ink and stamp the paper, then lightly score and fold 2 ½" on all sides to determine the placement of embellishments.  It may be easier to add bulky embellishments after the next step.

  4. Tape or glue the text paper to the inside of the box.  Bring the sides of the box together, folding inward.  As the paper folds together, create a crease in the corners with your fingers (fig. 4).

  5. Measure and score 1” on all sides of the 5 Ύ” x 7 Ύ” cardstock – this is the lid.  On the short side, measure and score another inch, beginning from the previous 1-inch mark (or 2” from the edge of the paper).

  6. Fold all score marks in to form your lid.  Cut four 1” squares from the corners (the creases will show the lines to cut the squares).  On the short sides of the lid, cut a 1” tab on each side (fig. 5).

  7. Embellish & decorate your lid.

  8. Bring the two tabs inward and tape or glue.  Bring the end folds to the inside (over the tabs) and glue or tape, forming the lid (fig. 6 & 7).

  9. Add additional embellishments & feet to the box if desired (fig. 8 & 9).
